News – Ryan Reynolds Is Sought For Highlander Reboot

Variety is reporting that Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment is attempting to sign Ryan Reynolds to star in the Highlander reboot.

“Ryan Reynolds has emerged as the front-runner to topline Lionsgate-Summit’s franchise reboot, and though it’s unclear whether an actual offer has been made, sources tell Variety that both sides are in talks and are very interested in working together.  Insiders add that Reynolds is weighing other offers and that [he] could still pursue another project,” says the trade.

The original Highlander was released in 1986, and grossed just under $6 million at the box office, but developed a cult following when it was released on video.  The film was directed by Russell Mulcahy and starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery.  The film spawned five sequels, a television show, and an animated series.  Despite the continuing decline in box office receipts, interest in a revival of the series has continued to be strong.

News – Early Reports On Blade Runner Sequel

After a few months of silence, several reports with information about the mysterious Blade Runner project are hitting the internet.  Late Thursday, Alcon Entertainment co-founders and co-Chief Executive Officers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove are reporting that Hampton Fancher is in talks to reunite with his Blade Runner director Ridley Scott to develop the idea for the original screenplay for the ground-breaking 1982 science fiction classic.  Scott and Fancher originally intended the original film as the first in a series of films incorporating the themes and characters featured in Philip K. Dick’s groundbreaking novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, from which the original film was adapted.  However, the film under performed at the box office, and Scott moved onto other projects.

In the same report, the filmmakers also revealed for the first time that the much-anticipated project is intended to be a sequel to the renowned original.  The filmmakers would reveal only that the new story will take place some years after the first film concluded.

Then, on Friday, Scott himself revealed a little more about the project.  Specifically, that the protagonist will be a woman.  Scott told The Daily Beast that he “started my first meetings on the Blade Runner sequel last week.  We have a very good take on it.  And we’ll definitely be featuring a female protagonist.”

The original Blade Runner film was released in June of 1982.  The film starred Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos.  The film grossed just over $27 million dollars at the box office, but found a renewed life due to home video and two subsequent director’s cut theatrical releases.

A bronze statue of Rocky, called “ROCKY”, was commissioned by Sylvester Stallone and created by A. Thomas Schomberg in 1981.  Three statues were created, and one was placed on the top of the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art for the filming of Rocky III.  After filming was complete, a furious debate erupted in Philadelphia between the Art Museum and the City’s Art Commission over the meaning of “art”.  Claiming the statue was not “art” but rather a “movie prop” the city considered various alternate locations and settled upon the front of the Spectrum in South Philadelphia.  It was later returned to the Art Museum where it was used in the filming of Rocky V, as well as Mannequin and Philadelphia.  Afterward, it was again moved to the front of the Spectrum.  The statue was returned to the museum’s steps on September 8, 2006.

In Rocky Balboa, when Rocky told Paulie (Burt Young) that he is going to make a comeback, Paulie suggested “you mad because they took down your statue?” which Rocky denied.

The third of the three statues was listed on eBay in early 2005, with a starting bid of $5 million.  It was being auctioned to raise funds for the International Institute for Sport and Olympic History.  It failed to sell and was listed again for $3 million; after receiving only one bid, which turned out to be fraudulent, it has been re-listed several times for $1 million. The statues weigh 800 pounds each and stand about 8’6″ tall.

News – Skyfall Teaser Poster Released

The teaser poster for the new James Bond film, Skyfall, was released today.  The poster is fairly simple with James Bond, played by Daniel Craig, walking down the gun barrel image that has been used to open most of the James Bond films.  Skyfall is being directed by Sam Mendes and will mark ‘s third appearance as Bond.

Currently, Skyfall is set for release on November 9th.  In addition to Craig, the film also stars Dame Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney, Berenice Marlohe, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Helen McCrory and Ola Rapace.

In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her.  As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

News - Prometheus Debuts New International Theatrical Poster

20th Century Fox has released a new international theatrical poster for the upcoming film Prometheus.  The film is directed by Ridley Scott and is a prequel to Alien, a film that Scott directed in 1979.  The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Logan Marshall-Green and Patrick Wilson.  The posters depicts a possible spoiler, so if you want to remain spoiler free before seeing the film, do not look at the poster below.

Rocky III – Music Video – Survivor – “Eye Of The Tiger”

“Eye of the Tiger” is the title of a song by American rock band Survivor.  It was released in May 1982 as a single from their third album Eye of the Tiger.  It was written at the request of actor Sylvester Stallone, who was unable to get permission for Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust”.  The song was to be the theme song for the movie Rocky III in which he was playing the main role.  The movie version of the song is different from the album version because it features tiger growls.  It gained tremendous MTV and radio airplay and topped charts worldwide in 1982.  It is memorable for its guitar riff and anthemic chorus.  It was certified platinum in August 1982 by the RIAA, signifying sales of 2 million vinyl copies, and the song has sold 3 million in digital downloads by March 2012.  It was voted VH1′s 63rd greatest hard rock song.

The song has been used many times to introduce large events such as sports matches, concerts, and political rallies; Newt Gingrich, for instance, has used it at his events since 2009, and in early 2012 was asked by the song’s creators to stop doing so.  As of January 2012, they have sued Gingrich to demand he cease playing it and to compensate them.  The song is used in the game Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero : World Tour.

News – Two More Added To Carrie Remake Cast

Variety is reporting that MGM and Screen Gems have signed Alex Russell (Chronicle) and Ansel Elgort to join the cast of Kimberly Peirce’s upcoming remake of the Stephen King novel, Carrie.  They will join Chloe Moretz, Julianne Moore, and Gabriella Wilde in the film.  Filming is scheduled to start shooting next month.

In the film, Elgort will play one of Carrie’s friends who takes her to the prom while Russell will play a bully.  Moretz will play the titular Carrie White, while Moore will play Carrie’s mother Margaret White.  Wilde will play the role of Sue Snell, the role originated by Amy Irving in the original film.

Carrie is the story of a mousy girl with telekinetic powers.  She is abused by her mother and picked on by the other kids a school, until she is pushed to far on one special night.  The original film was released in 1976 and was directed by Brian De Palma.  The film starred Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Irving, John Travolta, William Katt, Nancy Allen, and P.J. Soles.  The film grossed over $25 million at the box office and was nominated for two Academy Awards, Best Actress (Spacek) and Best Supporting Actress (Laurie).

The new version of Carrie, to be scripted by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, is said to be less a remake of the De Palma film and more a re-adaptation of the original text.   The film is scheduled to hit theaters on March 15, 2013.

News – Blue Lagoon: The Awakening To Debut On Lifetime

Lifetime will debut Blue Lagoon: The Awakening, starring Brenton Thwaites, Indiana Evans, and Denise Richards, on Saturday, June 16 at 8 p.m. 

The upcoming telepic tells the story of an overachieving high school student Emma Robinson (Evans) and slacker Dean McMullen (Thwaites) who find themselves on the same class trip to Trinidad.  Though they have little in common, the two attend a wild boat party, causing Emma to fall overboard during a police raid and Dean jumping in to save her.  The teens end up on deserted island while their parents search for them and Emma and Dean rely on each other to survive.  Original Blue Lagoon cast member Christopher Atkins will also make an appearance.

The Blue Lagoon had previouly been adapted to film in 1980, starring Brooke Shields and Atkins.  It grossed over $58 million and spawned a sequel in 1991 starring Milla  Jovovich.  The Blue Lagoon is based on the novel by Henry De Vere Stacpoole.

News – Quadrophenia Coming to Blu-Ray

Criterion recently announced they intend to release Franc Roddam’s directorial debut film Quadrophenia  on August 28th, 2012.  Quadrophenia tells the story of Jimmy, a disillusioned youth played by Phil Daniels, in 1965′s London.  Jimmy falls in with a gang called the Mods and they ride their scooters across London set to the music of The Who.  The movie also stars Sting just as The Police were rising in popularity.

The movie, released in theaters on November 2, 1979, was generally well liked by both critics and movie-goers alike.

Rocky III - Movie Synopsis

 

Rocky III picks up, literally, exactly where Rocky II left off.  And when I say literally, I mean it as the famous final seconds of the epic rematch between Apollo Creed and Balboa are shown (which, of course, starts a theme for Rocky III where the even more epic rubber match is somehow a concept not thought of).  Following this bout against Apollo Creed, Rocky Balboa is crowned the heavyweight champion of the world. The guitar riff starts and Rocky III introduces us to what will soon become a Rocky staple – the music video montage.

The montage, played to Survivor’s classic “Eye of the Tiger”, show s the only thing Rocky films know: juxtaposition.  Only this time the roles are reversed.  We see Rocky living in the lap of luxury, hand- picked opponents resulting in easy knockouts, commercials, endorsements, and even a guest appearance on The Muppet Show.

Meanwhile, Clubber Lang (a name as subtle and clever as Bludgeoner Smith), played by B.A. Barracus, or Ricky Schroeder’s bodyguard for some of you, is working his way up through the ranks of professional boxing.  This dude is tough and, above all, mean which makes him the perfect bad guy and antagonist to the affable Balboa.  He has a Mohawk and a vicious right hook.  He is even allowed to manhandle referees and punch his opponent while they are down.

Next, in a scene that is completely an aside and adds nothing to the story, a “somewhat charity event where all the proceeds are going to charity” (seriously, that is a line in the movie) takes place where Hulk Hogan fights Balboa in a prelude to MMA.  Hulk Hogan, who really stands 6 foot 7 inches and 300 pounds, is listed as 7 feet and 390 pounds to make the smallish Stallone not look like his real self of 5 foot 9 inches 170 pounds.  It’s still a fun scene and one of the more memorable of the movie.

The drama of the plot thickens though, when Rocky is commemorated by the good people of Philadelphia with the unveiling of a statue of Balboa to celebrate their favorite son.  Clubber shows up to piss all over the party and calls Balboa out for ducking him.  The last straw is when Clubber crassly hits on Adrian, as no real man would ever stand for that without fighting for her honor and the bout is on.

However, this is the pivotal moment where Mickey initially refuses to be a part of it because he knows Rock can’t win.  He reveals to the intellectually hapless Balboa that all ten of his title defenses were hand-picked to protect him.  Rocky is stunned and hurt but determined to fight Clubber and charms Mickey into training him.

Back to the juxtaposed music video montage where Rocky is training in a gratuitous media circus while the angry and hungry Clubber is apparently training in a basement.

Just before the fight, Mickey goes down with a heart attack.  Rocky, distracted by Mickey being absent and in mortal peril, gets the dog piss beat out of him in the 2nd round and Mickey expires in the locker room, where apparently the paramedics didn’t have access to, while the hamburger faced Balboa sits helplessly nearby.

Rocky is broken physically and emotionally and his pride and reputation are shattered.  In comes Apollo Creed to the rescue offering to train him for a rematch against Clubber (however, there is a mysterious quid pro quo that becomes an annoying running joke in the movie about a favor Rocky will owe Apollo when it’s all over).

They travel to Compton, California where Apollo trains Rocky to become the one thing he needs to be in order to beat Clubber – a black fighter.   Apollo tries to give Rocky the rhythm, speed, and taste in music of a black man.  But in the most unrealistic part of the movie, a black man tells a white man he needs to swim to prepare and the white man can’t do the one thing a white guy should be able to do better, swim.  But, Rocky doesn’t take to the training and in the apex of the movie, admits to Adrian that, like most white guys, Rocky is simply scared to fight the black guy.  But she convinces him that if he doesn’t confront his fear, and fight this fight for himself and not for anyone else’s motives, he will not be able to live with himself.

Black guy training resumes along with yet another music video montage of Rocky training.  Rocky finds new purpose along with his rhythm and speed.  He proves he’s ready for the upcoming fight by beating Apollo in a footrace, the second most unrealistic scene in the movie.

Onto the climax, the big rematch with the beast Clubber Lang.  Rocky comes out fighting like a black fighter which temporarily stuns Lang as he was expecting the lumbering white guy he was billed to fight.  But Clubber does recover and proceeds again to beat the living shit out of Rocky.  However, Rocky isn’t afraid anymore and notices that Lang appears to be tiring as he pummels Rock’s face.  In the crucial moment, the fight turns when Rocky discovers he can put his fucking gloves up to blocks Lang’s vicious hooks and jabs and not go unconscious while he waits for Clubber to get exhausted pummeling him.  Once Lang is gassed, Balboa takes over and knocks Clubber out to triumphantly recapture his title (spoiler alert, there will be no goddamned rubber match here either.)

The movie ends when Rocky finally gets to see what the favor he owes Apollo is which turns out to be the elusive rubber match between the new BFF’s.  Unfortunately, nobody will ever see it as the famous 80’s style freeze frame ending closes it out and the “Eye of the Tiger” theme song brings in the credits.

News – Total Recall To Be Re-Released In “Mind-Bending” Blu-ray Edition

This summer, Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release a new “Mind-Bending Edition” of Total Recall in order to coincide with the upcoming theatrical remake starring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, and Bill Nighy.

Total Recall is the story of Douglas Quaid(Arnold Schwarzenegger), who is haunted by a recurring dream about a journey to Mars.  He hopes to find out more about this dream and buys a holiday at Rekall Inc. where they sell implanted memories.  But something goes wrong with the memory implantation, and he remembers being a secret agent fighting against the evil Mars administrator Cohaagen (Ronny Cox).  Now the story really begins and it’s a rollercoaster ride until the massive end of the movie.  The film was directed by Paul Verhoeven and also starred Sharon Stone and Michael Ironside.  It grossed over $119 million at the box office and was the 7th highest grossing film of that year.

News – Two More Join A Good Day To Die Hard

Variety is reporting that two more actors have signed for John Moore’s upcoming fifth Die Hard installment, A Good Day To Die Hard.  Amaury Nolasco (Prison Break) and Megalyn Echikunwoke (House of Lies) have joined the supporting cast of the 20th Century Fox film.  They will join Bruce Willis, returning as John McClane, and the previously announced Jai Courtney, playing his son, Jack. 

A Good Day To Die Hard puts McClane on an international stage — truly a NYC  fish out of water in Moscow — and introduces his estranged son Jack.  An apple that has not fallen far from the tree, Jack may even be more of a hardass than his father.  Despite their differences, they must work together to keep each other alive, and the world safe for democracy.

The film is currently filming, for a February 14, 2013 release.

News – Sony Releases More Total Recall Photos

Sony Pictures has released a group of new photos from director Len Wiseman’s Total Recall.  The photos feature Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, and Jessica Biel.

Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Beckinsale) whom he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston) – there is no one Quaid can trust, except possibly a rebel fighter (Biel) working for the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy). The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate. News – Final G.I. Joe: Retaliation Posters Released

Paramount Pictures has released what are to be the final theatrical posters for their upcoming summer blockbuster film G.I. Joe: Retaliation via Comingsoon.net.  The posters feature the images of various characters from the film.   G.I. Joe is a film series based on the popular Hasbro toyline and 80′s cartoon series that ran for 85 episodes from 1985-1986 and spawned one animated film.

Set for release on June 29th, 2012, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.  The sequel is directed by John Chu (Step Up 3D, Never Say Never), and continues the toy-inspired world depicted in 2009′s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra with a primarily new cast (except for the returning Ray Park as Snake Eyes, Channing Tatum as Duke, and Byung Hun-lee as Stormshadow).  Newcomers include Bruce Willis as Joe Colton, Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock, Elodie Yung as Jinx, Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye, DJ Cotrona as Flint, RZA as The Blind Master, Ray Stevenson as Firefly, and Joseph Mazzello as Mouse.

News – Fox Releases First Prometheus Clip “Prometheus Has Landed”

20th Century Fox has released the first clip for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Logan Marshall-Green and Patrick Wilson.  The clip runs about a minute long, and appears to be edited clip of the ship Prometheus landing on an alien planet.  So if you don’t want to know anything about this film before seeing it in the theaters, do not watch this clip.

The sci-fi thriller, opening June 8th, takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.  The film is prequel to Scott’s 1979 classic science fiction film Alien.  Scott has repeatedly stated that although this is prequel to Alien, that it is not an Alien film.  Of the film’s Alien connection he said that “the DNA” of Alien is there but “everything else is original”.  Scott says “in the last few minutes of the movie you’ll understand what we’re talking about.”  He went onto say “I never thought about science fiction until I started to realise that there was something in the first Alien that no one ever asked questions about.  I thought, well, that could be the centrepiece of what we’ve just completed.”

News – Julianne Moore and Gabriella Wilde Confirmed For Carrie

MGM and Screen Gems has announced that they have signed Julianne Moore in the role of Margaret White in Kimberly Peirce’s upcoming remake of the Stephen King novel, Carrie.  Margaret is the mother of the titular Carrie White, who will be played by Chloe Moretz (Hugo, Kick-Ass).

Additionally, they announced that they have cast Gabriella Wilde for the the role of Sue Snell, the role originated by Amy Irving.

Carrie is the story of a mousy girl with telekinetic powers.  She is abused by her mother and picked on by the other kids a school, until she is pushed to far on one special night.  The original film was released in 1976 and was directed by Brian De Palma.  The film starred Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Irving, John Travolta, William Katt, Nancy Allen, and P.J. Soles.  The film grossed over $25 million at the box office and was nominated for two Academy Awards, Best Actress (Spacek) and Best Supporting Actress (Laurie).

The new version of Carrie, to be scripted by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, is said to be less a remake of the De Palma film and more a re-adaptation of the original text.   The film is scheduled to hit theaters on March 15, 2013.

News – Paul Reubens Gives Update On Untitled Pee-wee Herman Film

Comingsoon.net recently caught up with Paul Reubens during a press junket for the upcoming TRON: Uprising television series.  He was asked about the still untitled Pee-wee Herman film that was announced nearly two years ago.  In addition to starring as Herman, Reubens is providing the screenplay alongside fellow actor/writer Paul Rust while Judd Apatow will produce.

“That’s any minute, supposedly,” he said.  ”…It’s going great.  We have a meeting this coming week.  We just did a very quick little rewrite on it.  As far as I know it’s getting shot very soon.”

“I actually wasn’t supposed to talk about it initially,” Reubens explained of the long delay since word of the project broke.  ”I was talking about it in this very veiled, secret way going, ‘Oh, I wish I could talk about it.’ …It got leaked about six months to a year before it was supposed to.”

The film will be the third in the Pee-wee Herman series.  The first Pee-wee film debuted in 1985.  Directed by Tim Burton, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure went onto gross over $40 million at the box office and spawned the 1988 sequel, Big Top Pee-wee.

News – Wrath Of The Titans Coming To Blu-ray

Warner Bros. Pictures has announced the release date for Wrath of the Titans, directed by Jonathan Liebesman.  Wrath is a sequel to the 2010 remake of the 80′s classic Clash Of The Titans.  The film stars Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, and Ralph Fiennes, who all appeared in the 2010 film.   The film is expected to be available for purchase on June 26th.

Once again, Wrath tells the story of Perseus (Worthington).  A decade after his historic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus (Worthington)—the demigod son of Zeus (Neeson)—is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius.  Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans.  Dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades (Fiennes) and Poseidon.  The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld.  Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus’ godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramírez), switch loyalty and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus.  The Titans’ strength grows stronger as Zeus’ remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth.  Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon’s demigod son, Argenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.

The film was released in March of this year, and has grossed over $81 million at the box office to date.

News – The Smurfs 3 Already In The Works

Although production has just begun on The Smurfs 2, Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation are already making plans for a third adventure with Karey Kirkpatrick and Chris Poche returning as screenwriters.

Currently filming, The Smurfs 2 is a sequel to the 2011 worldwide hit that took in over $563 million at the worldwide box office.

Most of the creative talent is returning from the first film for the sequel that takes the Smurfs to Europe.  Director Raja Gosnell, Producer Jordan Kerner, Executive Producer Ezra Swerdlow, and stars Neil Patrick Harris as Patrick Winslow, Jayma Mays as Grace Winslow, Sofia Vergara as Odile, and Hank Azaria as Gargamel are the live action actors returning from the first film.  Brendan Gleeson joins the cast as Patrick Winslow’s stepfather, Victor Doyle.  Returning as the voices of the Smurfs, all of the principal voice cast members will reprise their roles, including Katy Perry as Smurfette, Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, Alan Cumming as Gutsy, Fred Armisen as Brainy, George Lopez as Grouchy and Anton Yelchin as Clumsy.  John Oliver, who took a cameo voice role as Vanity Smurf in the first film, returns to voice his now primary role.  Additionally behind the microphone, Christina Ricci and JB Smoove will voice the new Smurf-like naughty characters, Vexy and Hackus, respectively.

In this sequel to the hybrid live action/animated family blockbuster comedy The Smurfs, the evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. The Smurfs is based on a Belgian comic and television franchise centered on a group of small blue fictional creatures called Smurfs, created and first introduced as a series of comic strips by the Belgian cartoonist Peyo.    The Smurfs were made into motion pictures on Belgium in 1965 and 1976.  The Smurfs became a Saturday-morning cartoon series in 1981 produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions.  The series aired on NBC from 1981 to Aug 25 1990.  The show continued to air on the USA network until 1993, followed by the Cartoon network until 2003.  The 1976 film was redubbed into English and re-released into the United States after the success of the cartoon as The Smurfs and the Magic Flute.

News – 21 Jump Street To Come To Blu-Ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment recently announced they intend to release Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s  21 Jump Street , the movie not the TV show, on Blu-ray June 26, 2012.

21 Jump Street  tells the story about two young cops, played by Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, going back to high school and infultrating a drug ring.  The movie, released in theaters in March 2012, was well received by critics and theater-goers alike.   The movie made over $134 million at the box office.  The movie is loosely based off of the TV show that aired for 5 seasons, from 1987 to 1991.

Alien - Movie Synopsis

 

In a world where vile, evil men rule the known galaxy, comes a tale of horror on an epic scale. Our film begins, out in the depths of space, aboard a commercial ship called Nostromo. It’s on a steady course back to Earth with twenty million tons of cargo in tow. The seven-member crew is abruptly awakened from their stasis by the onboard computer in order to investigate a transmission coming from a near by planet.  Since they are corporate minions with the freedom of a Walmart greeter, they do as they are told, placing their meager lives in danger for their greedy bosses. Captain Dallas, played by Tom Skerritt, leads a three-person group to investigate the signal on the mysterious planet along with executive officer, Kane, and ship navigator, Lambert. I think the science officer was still sipping his morning coffee back in the cantina. A navigator is a better choice to wear the Star Trek redshirt than a science officer any day, right?

Anyhow, Dallas, Kane, and Lambert discover that the signal is coming from a derelict alien spacecraft. Inside it, they find the remains of a large alien creature whose ribs appear to have exploded outward from the inside. Apparently the Alien must have had Taco Bell.  Meanwhile, the Nostromo’s computer partially deciphers the signal transmission, which Warrant Officer Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, determines to be some type of warning not to go inside the ship. Oops!

Kane discovers a vast chamber containing numerous alien eggs, one of which hatches a creature that attaches itself to Kane’s lovely face quicker than Ned Beatty can squeal like a little piggy. Dallas and Lambert carry an unconscious Kane back to the Nostromo. Ash ignores Ripley’s orders to follow the ship’s quarantine protocol and lets them in. During an unsuccessful attempt to remove the creature from Kane’s face, they discover that its blood is an extremely corrosive acid. The blood is so corrosive it eats through many layers of metal but not the alien’s own skin.  Eventually, the creature gets sick of dry-humping Kane’s voicebox, detaches itself, and dies.  With the ship repaired, the crew resumes their trip back to Earth.

Kane awakens seemingly unharmed. Everyone avoids talking about his mouth getting penetrated more than a whore at a political convention. That is until he begins to choke and convulse during dinner, before an alien creature bursts out from his chest, instantly killing him. The wonderful meal ends with the little darling escaping into the ship before dessert was served.

Lacking any conventional weapons, the crew is forced to throw together whatever they can. One of the dirty Repo Men, Brett, follows the crew’s cat into a large room, but chasing pussy gets you into trouble every time.  He encounters a now-fully-grown Alien – tall, dark, and oily…with bad teeth – think better-looking Italian.  The alien attacks him and runs off with his mangled body into one of the ship’s airshafts.  Dallas, the ship’s best known actor, enters the shaft with the intention of forcing the Alien into an airlock where it can be expelled into space, but the quick mofo ambushes the Cap’n too. Alien 3, Humans 0.  This one isn’t going into overtime, folks. 

While the rest of the crew shits themselves, Ripley accesses the ship’s computer.  She discovers that Ash has been ordered to return the Alien to the Nostromo’s corporate employers, even at the expense of the crew’s lives. Ash attacks her, but Parker intervenes. He decapitates Ash with a blow from a fire extinguisher, proving the time-tested adage, fire extinguishers don’t kill old, British, men; big, black, American men do. Surprisingly, in a twist that would make M.Night Shyamalan proud, Ash is revealed to be an android.  Did someone forget to share that there are androids in the future?  Well there are. Yes, it makes more economic and practical sense to send a crew of androids to mine ore for free, but this is an evil corporation we are talking about. Cue the maniacal laughter. 

Right before Parker incinerates the headless Ash, he/it predicts that the other crewmembers will not survive. Thank you, Android Obvious! The remaining three members form a plan to arm the ship’s self-destruct mechanism and escape in the shuttle, but before that can happen, the Alien kills Parker and Lambert while they are out gathering needed supplies. Ripley initiates the self-destruct sequence and heads for the shuttle with the cat. Don’t forget the fucking cat! Two pussies are always better than one. Unfortunately for our feline duo, the Alien block’s their escape like the fat chick protecting her hot friends at a bar.  Like a drunken skank at last call, Ripley abandons her feline friend, one that was seemingly so important to her a moment before, to satisfy her own needs. Believe it or not, she is unsuccessful in her attempts to abort the ship’s self-destruct mechanism, so rejected she heads back. This time, the Alien is nowhere to be seen, and Ripley is narrowly able to escape in the shuttle as the Nostromo explodes.  Don’t forget the fucking cat!!

Alone, Ripley prepares to enter stasis, but discovers that the Alien is aboard the shuttle too. She puts on a space suit and opens the hatch, causing an explosive decompression that forces the Alien into the open doorway, but keeps the cat safe. Ripley shoots the pesky Alien with a grappling gun, but the gun is yanked from her hands. It catches in the closing door, tethering the Alien to the shuttle. The Alien attempts to crawl into one of the engines, but Ripley activates them, blasting it into space. She then puts herself, and the fucking cat, into stasis for the return trip to Earth.

News – Cole Hauser Joins The Cast Of A Good Day To Die Hard

20th Century Fox has announced that it has signed another actor for the upcoming fifth Die Hard installment, A Good Day To Die Hard.  Cole Hauser has signed on for villainous role, playing a character by the name of Collins.  He will join Bruce Willis, returning as John McClane, and the previously announced Jai Courtney, playing his son, Jack.  Hauser has starred in two previous films with Willis, 2002′s Hart’s War and 2003′s Tears of the Sun.

A Good Day To Die Hard puts McClane on an international stage — truly a NYC  fish out of water in Moscow — and introduces his estranged son Jack.  An apple that has not fallen far from the tree, Jack may even be more of a hardass than his father.  Despite their differences, they must work together to keep each other alive, and the world safe for democracy.

The film is currently filming, for a February 14, 2013 release.

News – Adventures In Babysitting Coming To Blu-ray

Walt Disney Entertainment has announced that they are planning to release onto Blu-ray Christopher Columbus’ Adventures In Babysitting.  The film is expected to be available for purchase on August 7th.

Adventures In Babysitting tells the story of Chris Parker (Elizabeth Shue), who agrees to babysit after her “dread” date stands her up.  Expecting a dull evening, Chris settles down with three kids for a night of TV… and boredom.  But when her frantic friend Brenda calls and pleads to be rescued from the bus station in downtown Chicago, the evening soon explodes into an endless whirl of hair-raising adventures.  Babysitter and kids leave their safe suburban surroundings and head for the heart of the big city, never imagining how terrifyingly funny their expedition will become.  The film also starred Maia Brewton, Keith Coogan, Vincent D’Onofrio, Penelope Ann Miller, and Bradley Whitford.

The film was released in July 1987, and grossed over $34 million at the box office.

News - The Entity To Make Blu-ray Debut In July

Starz and Anchor Bay have announced that they are planning to release onto Blu-ray Sidney J. Furie’s The Entity.  The film is expected to be available for purchase on July 3rd.

The Entity tells the story of Carla Moran (Barbara Hershey).  Moran awakens one night to find herself being beaten and raped by an unseen presence.  Terrified of what’s happening to her, and shunned by friends and family who think she’s lost her mind, she seeks help from parapsychologists.  The researchers soon discover that evil spiritual force has been drawn to Carla and is responsible for the violent attacks.  The question now, however, is how do they stop it?  The Entity is alleged to be based on a true story.  The film also starred Ron Silver, David Labiosa, and George Coe.

The film was released in February 1983, and grossed over $13 million at the box office.

Tough Enough tells the story of an aspiring country/western singer (Dennis Quaid), whose money is disappearing faster than his career opportunities.  Quaid enters a “Tough Man” amateur boxing contest to earn some cash to pay his bills.  Amazingly enough, he wins it, and is picked to go onto the national finals.  He’s torn between his first love, music, and the glitz, glamor and money of the “Tough Man” world.  The film also starred Carlene Watkins, Pam Grier, Warren Oates, Bruce McGill, and Wilford Brimley.

News – Tim Burton Gives Update On Beetlejuice 2

Tim Burton was out promoting both of his upcoming projects, Dark Shadows and Frankenweenie, yesterday.  Burton provided some additional information concerning the long-in-development Beetlejuice 2.

Regarding Beetlejuice 2, he said: “Seth [Grahame-Smith] is writing something.  I just told him because I liked the character, I just thought I’d have a better response if he has ideas about it to just let him [work on it].”  He added: “If it’s interesting.  I don’t know if I’d ever know a good script if it bit me in the face, but I know what I like.”

The original Beetlejuice was directed by Burton, the director of Dark Shadows.  It was followed by an animated series that ran for four seasons on ABC.  Burton acted as an executive producer for the series, however, Keaton was not involved in the project.  In the early ’90s, talk of a sequel started, and a screenplay was allegedly written with the title Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian.  Burton had planned to return as director, but the project failed to develop beyond an initial screenplay.  It is currently unknown whether or not Grahame-Smith’s upcoming script will have any crossover with that original concept.

News – Lone Wolf McQuade Busts Out Onto Blu-ray

With a resurgence in the popularity of Chuck Norris due to his appearance in this summer’s The Expendables 2, many of his classic 80′s films are now coming to Blu-ray.  20th Century Fox/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have revealed that they are planning to release onto Blu-ray Steve Carver’s Lone Wolf McQuade starring Norris.  The film is expected to be available for purchase on July 17th.

Lone Wolf McQuade tells the story of legendary renegade Texas Ranger J.J. McQuade (Norris).  McQuade is fierce with his gun – but lethal with his black belt!  When his teenage daughter’s life is threatened by hijackers attempting to steal a truck full of weapons and ammunition, the job becomes personal for McQuade.  Uncovering a colossal arms-struggling outfit that is selling guns and ammo to terrorists all over the world, McQuade come face to face with its kingpin, Rawley Wilkes (Carradine) – a world-renowned martial arts expert who has never lost a battle!  Does the Ranger have what it takes to save his daughter and his honor – or has he finally met his match, and ultimately his demise?   The film also starred David Carradine, Barbara Carrera, Robert Beltran, and William Sanderson. 

The film was released in April 1983, and grossed over $12 million at the box office.

News – Evil Dead Remake Begins Principal Photography

Principal photography has started for The Evil Dead in Auckland, New Zealand and will wrap in early July 2012.  The film is being directed by Fede Alvarez, who wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues. The film mark the Alvarez’s deature debut.  Diablo Cody did revisions on the draft.

In this retelling, Jane Levy who plays Mia, a young woman trying to kick a drug addiction.  Jessica Lucas will play the best friend of Levy, who is also a nurse.  Levy and five friends hole up at a remote cabin where they discover the Book of the Dead.  An archaeologist’s tape recording reveals that the ancient text was discovered among the Khandarian ruins of a Sumerian civilization.  A demonic force is unleashed possessing each until only one is left to fight for survival.   Though the plot is similar to the original, the idea is a new take, this time without the character of Ash, played by Bruce Campbell in the original film.

Campbell will produce the film with Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert.  The Evil Dead is scheduled for a April 12, 2013 release.

The original film was released on April 15, 1983.  The film grossed $2.4 million dollars and spawned two sequels.

News – Clue To Be Discovered On Blu-ray In August

As part of its 100th Anniversary this year, Paramount Home Media Distribution will release some of their catalog titles onto Blu-ray.  Clue will be released onto Blu-ray in the August wave.

Based on the popular board game, Clue is a movie about six guests, a butler, and a maid, who are all involved in the murders of sixpeople.  The guests all meet at Hill House, where you learn that Professor Plum works in D.C., where everyone else lives.  Colonel Mustard is a client of Miss Scarlet, who is the ex-employer of Yvette, the maid, who had an affair with the husband of Mrs. White, etc.  When Mr. Boddy, who is blackmailing each guest, gives the guests each a weapon, he tells them they should kill Wadsworth, the butler, to avoid being exposed.  With Mrs. Peacock’s craziness, and Mr. Green’s clumsiness, the whole group finds themselves tangled in a web of murder, lies, and hilarity.  The film starred Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, and Lesley Ann Warren.  It was directed by Jonathan Lynn.

The film was released in December 1985, and grossed over $14 million at the box office.  The film was unique in that it had three seperate endings, each of which were shown on different screens in the theaters.  The three endings were not available as part of one film until the video release the following year.

News – New Skyfall Videoblog Focuses On Production Design

A new video blog from the set of the new James Bond film, Skyfall, was released today.  In the video, we we see Oscar-winning production designer Dennis Gassner discussing his craft alongside an interview with Dame Judi Dench.  Skyfall is being directed by Sam Mendes and will mark Daniel Craig‘s third appearance as Bond.

Currently, Skyfall is set for release on November 9th.  In addition to Craig and Dench, the film also stars Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney, Berenice Marlohe, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Helen McCrory and Ola Rapace.

In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her.  As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

News – Gordon-Levitt Developing Little Shop of Horrors Remake

Heat Vision reports that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is developing a remake of Little Shop of Horrors at Warner Bros. Pictures as a potential vehicle for him to star in.

Marc Platt (Wanted) is producing the new version, which will be written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the writer of Broadway’s “Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark”.  A director has not yet been set.

Roger Corman’s original 1960 version starred Jonathan Haze and also featured Jack Nicholson in one of his first film appearances.  That film became a cult classic, which in turn helped the musical version on the stage come to fuition.  The success of the musical helped launch the 1986 remake with Frank Oz in the director’s chair.  That film starred Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Steve Martin, and featured a very memorable cameo by Bill Murphy.  The film was released in December 1986, and grossed over $38 million at the box office.

News – Pet Sematary To Be Uncovered On Blu-ray In October

Pet Sematary is based on the best-selling Stephen King book, who also wrote the screenplay.  The film is the story of the Creeds, who have just moved to a new house in the countryside.  Their house is perfect, except for two things: the semi-trailers that roar past on the narrow road, and the mysterious cemetary in the woods behind the house.  The Creed’s neighbors are reluctant to talk about the cemetary, and for good reason too.  Soon, the Creeds find out that sometimes dead is better.  The film starred Dale Midkiff, Denise Crosby, and Fred Gwynne.  It was directed by Mary Lambert.

The film was released in April 1989, and grossed over $57 million at the box office.  The film spawned a far less successful in 1992 that was directed by Lambert and starred Edward Furlong and Anthony Edwards.

News – Code of Silence Comes To Blu-ray In July

The summer of Chuck Norris films continues.  20th Century Fox/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have revealed that they are planning to release on Blu-ray Andrew Davis’ Code of Silence starring Norris.  The film is expected to be available for purchase on July 17th.

Code of Silence tells the story of Eddie Cusack (Norris), a Chicago detective who plays by his own rules – a dangerous habit, especially when he breaks the force’s “code of silence” to blow the lid off a deadly police cover-up.  Now an outcast, he receives little help from his embittered fellow officers when he’s hurled into a blistering battle against rival drug kingpins.  But Cusack is a one man army, waging war on the criminals with his razor-sharp wits, lightning-fast Karate moves and a special surprise: “Prowler,” a remote-controlled, rocket-equipped tank!  The film als0 starred Henry Silva, Bert Remsen, and featured an early appearance by Dennis Farina.

The film was released in May 1985, and grossed over $20 million at the box office.

News – Stallone Talks More About Rambo 5

Sylvester Stallone recently sat down with MTV News at CinemaCon to talk about his upcoming summer film The Expendables 2.  During the conversation, Stallone also dropped some hints as to what to expect in a fifth (and potentially final) film in the Rambo film series, which is looking more and more likely to happen.

“There’s a volcanic eruption [brewing].  The magma of Rambo is coming to the surface” says Stallone who adds that he’s already thought of a location to set it – “I like the whole Mexican situation, what’s going on down there.  So I’m working on a formula for it right now.”

Asked if there’s still more of John Rambo’s story to tell, the actor says “I know there is.  It’s one thing where you lay down the final culmination of your life where you can articulate it, but also act on it where he realizes what his destiny really is.  It’s not to be a farmer, it’s not to be obscure; it’s to go out in a blaze of glory in a heroic fashion.  But is he really doing it for himself or is he doing it because that’s just his id?  That’s who he is.”

The first Rambo movie was First Blood.  It was released on October 22, 1982 and grossed over $47 million dollars.  It was followed in the 80′s by two sequels, both of which were more successful than the original film.  Stallone returned to the role after a twenty year absence in 2008 in Rambo.  That film exceeded expectations and grossed over $113 million worldwide, and created momentum for a fifth film.

After the “victory” at Antietam, Lincoln issues the emancipation proclamation while Shaw’s neck heals.  At a reception hosted by his parents at their stately home, Shaw meets Massachusetts Governor John Andrew and Frederick Douglass.  Governor Andrew informs Shaw that he and Mr. Douglass have worked together to form an all black infantry regiment entitled the 54th Massachusetts, which causes Shaw’s mother to swoon, “Colored soldiers, Rob, just think of it!”  Governor Andrew then offers Shaw the commission to be colonel and commanding officer of the 54th Massachusetts.  After a bit of racial needling by Shaw’s close friend and drunkard Cabot Forbes, played by Cary Elwes . Shaw accepts his commission and asks Forbes to be his Major and second-in-command.  Director Edward Zwick settled on the name of Cabot Forbes, after rejecting the names Preston Vanderbilt and Armstrong Cavendish, because those names just weren’t white enough.        

Also Volunteering for the 54th  is Shaw’s friend and Harvard classmate, Thomas Searles. The character of Thomas Searles exists to offset the Hollywood doctrine that any group of black men greater than three is considered a gang.  Since Searles has received a classical education befitting of any respectable white man, he becomes the magic negro that adds class to the mostly illiterate band of runaway slaves that make up the rest of the 54th. However, Searles is immediately confronted in a tent by his foil Private Trip, played by Denzel Washington, who calls Searles a house nigger and “Snowflake.” Searles also suffers the shock when Col. Shaw forbids him from having a friendly conversation with his friend and former Harvard classmate Forbes.  Many more men join the regiment, including a freed black man with a stutter named Jupiter Shart, and the gravedigger John Rawlins, played by Morgan Freeman.

The rest of the movie shows the progress of the 54th Massachusetts: how they are whipped into shape by the stereotypical Irish Sgt. Major, and in the case of Private Trip, literally whipped for going AWOL to find a better pair of shoes; and how the infantry unit is deprived of necessities like uniforms, decent socks and shoes, food and provisions.

After spending time doing mostly menial work, Shaw realizes his unit is to be used only for manual labor. Shaw confronts his commanding officers, whom he finds are involved in war profiteering and corruption, and threatens to report them if the 54th infantry is not immediately deployed for a suicide mission. Shaw’s request is granted, as the regiment later participates in a skirmish in South Carolina where they make those cowardly Rebs run away. Soon after, Shaw volunteers the 54th infantry to lead an assault on Fort Wagner, an important Confederate stronghold near Charleston harbor. After nightfall, he leads the men in a charge upon the fort. Shaw attempts to rally the men forward, but he is shot and killed. Numerous other soldiers in the regiment charge up the parapet and also die.

The final scene depicts the lifeless body of Col. Shaw being buried in a mass grave alongside Private Trip and other soldiers from the 54th.  For the commanding officer of the Confederate army at Fort Wagner, burying a white man with blacks in the same grave was considered the ultimate insult.  Shaw’s father disagreed.  He wrote, “We can imagine no holier place than that in which he lies, among his brave and devoted followers, nor wish for him better company.” 

 

News – Leonard Nimoy In Talks To Return To Star Trek…Again

Although he has stated that he is retired from acting, Leonard Nimoy has been one of the busiest actors around for the last couple of years.  He has appeared on Fringe, and lent his voice talents to Transformers: Dark of the Moon and The Big Bang Theory.  Now, he maybe appearing in front of the camera again and returning to the franchise that made him famous.  The actor appeared during CNN’s coverage of the Shuttle Enterprise’s arrival in New York, and at one point, CNN correspondent Jason Carroll asked Nimoy if he was planning to appear in J.J. Abrams’  Star Trek  sequel.  Nimoy responded, “Uhh, we’re talking. We’re talking.” 

Additionally, AintItCoolNews is reporting via an unnamed source, that Nimoy will be appearing in the sequel and “will have long and ‘stately’ robes.”  This may indicate that the Old Spock will return in the sequel in some capacity.  The fact that he’s “talking” while the movie has already been in production for a few months could indicate that, if anything, the role will be more of a cameo.

The Abrams’  directed film has shrouded itself in secrecy since it began production a couple of months ago, so it would be no surprise that the director may try to surprise fans with a cameo of the iconic Nimoy. 

The film is a sequel to 2009′s Star Trek, which itself was a reboot of the thirty-year-old film series, and nearly fifty-year-old television series.  The 2009 film grossed over $257 million in the United States, and over $385 million worldwide.  It was the highest grossing film of the entire Star Trek series.

The sequel, currently filming, stars John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, and Peter Weller.  The movie is scheduled for a May 17, 2013  release.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released what is likely the final trailer for their upcoming summer blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises.  The film is being directed by Christopher Nolan, and it is the concluding chapter to his take on Batman.

Opening in theaters on July 20, 2012, the Nolan’s highly-anticipated third Batman movie stars Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Juno Temple, Josh Pence, Daniel Sunjata, Nestor Carbonell, Matthew Modine, Tom Conti, Joey King, Brett Cullen, Chris Ellis, Josh Stewart, Christopher Judge, Adam Rodriguez and Rob Brown.  Although the Batman film series will undoubtedly go on in some other form, both Nolan and Bale have stated that this will be the end of their involvement in the series.

News – Class of Nuke ‘Em High Coming To Blu-ray

Independent British distributors Arrow Video are preparing a Dual Format Edition of Richard W. Haines and Lloyd Kaufman’s Class of Nuke ‘Em High.  The film starred Janelle Brady, Gil Brenton, and Robert Prichard.  It was released in 1986, and spawned two sequels released in 1991 and 1994.   

Class of Nuke ‘Em High tells the story of students at Tromaville High School.  At Tromaville High School the kids are revolting.  Literally.  The irradiated marijuana they’ve been buying from The Cretins, a tough gang of ex-star pupils turned atomic punks, is turning them into freaks.  Girls are giving birth to demon babies, the nerds are developing super strength and there’s a monster in the school basement that eats honour roll students for breakfast.  Welcome to State education Troma-style, a place where the science lab is kitted out with lasers and nudity is often compulsory.  The Class of Nuke ‘Em high will have their work cut out surviving until the final bell, let alone graduation.

News – Fox Releases Nearly 3 Minute Prometheus International Trailer

20th Century Fox has released another international theatrical trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Logan Marshall-Green and Patrick Wilson.  The trailer runs nearly three minutes and reveals many potential spoilers for the film, so if you don’t want to know anything about this film before seeing it in the theaters, do not watch this trailer.

The sci-fi thriller, opening June 8th, takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.  The film is prequel to Scott’s 1979 classic science fiction film Alien.  Scott has repeatedly stated that although this is prequel to Alien, that it is not an Alien film.  Of the film’s Alien connection he said that “the DNA” of Alien is there but “everything else is original”.  Scott says “in the last few minutes of the movie you’ll understand what we’re talking about.”  He went onto say “I never thought about science fiction until I started to realise that there was something in the first Alien that no one ever asked questions about.  I thought, well, that could be the centrepiece of what we’ve just completed.”

News – Julianne Moore Offered Role In Carrie Remake

Julianne Moore has been offered the role of Margaret White in Kimberly Peirce’s upcoming remake of the Stephen King novel, Carrie, Deadline reports.  Margaret is the mother of the titular Carrie White, who will be played by Chloe Moretz (Hugo, Kick-Ass).

Carrie is the story of a mousy girl with telekinetic powers.  She is abused by her mother and picked on by the other kids a school, until she is pushed to far on one special night.  The original film was released in 1976 and was directed by Brian De Palma.  The film starred Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, John Travolta, William Katt, Nancy Allen, and P.J. Soles.  The film grossed over $25 million at the box office and was nominated for two Academy Awards, Best Actress (Spacek) and Best Supporting Actress (Laurie).

The new version of Carrie, to be scripted by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, is said to be less a remake of the De Palma film and more a re-adaptation of the original text.   The film is scheduled to hit theaters on March 15, 2013.

News – Poltergeist Remake To Be Produced By Sam Raimi

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Sam Raimi has signed onto to produce MGM’s upcoming remake of Poltergeist alongside producers Nathan Kahane and Roy Lee.  Currently there are no actors or directors attached to the project, but that will likely change in the upcoming months.

This is second remake of an 80′s horror film that Raimi has signed onto produce.  Currently, Raimi is acting as a producer on The Evil Dead remake along with Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert.  Raimi directed the original film in 1982.

The original film was directed by Tobe Hooper and released in 1982 with Steven Spielberg producing and told the story of a malevolent spectral force that tries to take daughter of a Californian family.  It starred Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams, Heather O’Rourke, and Zelda Rubinstein.  The film was a hit among audiences, generating over $76 million at the box office.  It spawned two sequels, Poltergeist II: The Other Side in 1986 and Poltergeist III in 1988.

News – USA Today Publishes New G.I. Joe And Expendables Photos

USA Today has unveiled their summer movie preview and, in among their gallery, there are brand-new stills from G.I. Joe: Retaliation and The Expendables 2.

G.I. Joe is a film series based on the popular Hasbro toyline and 80′s cartoon series that ran for 85 episodes from 1985-1986 and spawned one animated film.

Set for release on June 29th, 2012, the sequel is directed by John Chu (Step Up 3D, Never Say Never), and continues the toy-inspired world depicted in 2009′s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra with a primarily new cast (except for the returning Channing Tatum as Duke, Ray Park as Snake Eyes and Byung Hun-lee as Stormshadow). Newcomers include Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock, Elodie Yung as Jinx, DJ Cotrona as Flint, Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye, RZA as The Blind Master, Ray Stevenson as Firefly, Joseph Mazzello as Mouse and Bruce Willis as General Joe Colton.

The Expendables 2 is scheduled to be release on August 17, 2012.  Directed by Simon West, The Expendables 2 stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Liam Hemsworth, Nan Yu, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

News – The Smurfs 2 Begins Production

Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation announced today that production has begun on the live-action/computer animated hybrid 3D family comedy The Smurfs 2, the sequel to the 2011 worldwide hit that took in over $563 million at the worldwide box office.

Most of the creative talent is returning from the first film for an all-new adventure that takes the Smurfs to Europe.  Director Raja Gosnell, Producer Jordan Kerner, Executive Producer Ezra Swerdlow, and stars Neil Patrick Harris as Patrick Winslow, Jayma Mays as Grace Winslow, Sofia Vergara as Odile, and Hank Azaria as Gargamel are the live action actors returning from the first film.  Brendan Gleeson joins the cast as Patrick Winslow’s stepfather, Victor Doyle.  Returning as the voices of the Smurfs, all of the principal voice cast members will reprise their roles, including Katy Perry as Smurfette, Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, Alan Cumming as Gutsy, Fred Armisen as Brainy, George Lopez as Grouchy and Anton Yelchin as Clumsy.  John Oliver, who took a cameo voice role as Vanity Smurf in the first film, returns to voice his now primary role.  Additionally behind the microphone, Christina Ricci and JB Smoove will voice the new Smurf-like naughty characters, Vexy and Hackus, respectively.

In this sequel to the hybrid live action/animated family blockbuster comedy The Smurfs, the evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants — and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs — Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world’s greatest sorcerer. It’s up to Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy, and Vanity to return to our world, reunite with their human friends Patrick and Grace Winslow, and rescue her! Will Smurfette, who has always felt different from the other Smurfs, find a new connection with the Naughties Vexy and Hackus – or will the Smurfs convince her that their love for her is True Blue?

Commenting on the announcement, Kerner said, “We’ve brought the entire live-action and voice cast into the sequel. It’s a real thrill to ‘get the Smurf village back together’ for another adventure. The same holds true for the crew. We are so deep in talent we know a fine film will result. It’s like visiting with old friends – just some slightly smaller than others.”

The Smurfs 2 is scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters on July 31, 2013.

The Smurfs is based on a Belgian comic and television franchise centered on a group of small blue fictional creatures called Smurfs, created and first introduced as a series of comic strips by the Belgian cartoonist Peyo.    The Smurfs were made into motion pictures on Belgium in 1965 and 1976.  The Smurfs became a Saturday-morning cartoon series in 1981 produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions.  The series aired on NBC from 1981 to Aug 25 1990.  The show continued to air on the USA network until 1993, followed by the Cartoon network until 2003.  The 1976 film was redubbed into English and re-released into the United States after the success of the cartoon as The Smurfs and the Magic Flute.
